  • Scope and content: SPAR Aileen Anita Cooke, apprentice seamen, is receiving her "boot" course at a United States Training Station, Manhattan Beach, Brooklyn, New York. She is shown seated on a winch on the deck of the dry-land training ship "USS Neversail". Seaman Cooke enlisted in the United States Coast Guard Women's Reserve in February. The daughter or Mr. and Mrs. Allan A. Vooke of 1141 East 58th Street, Los Angeles, California, she was valedictorian of her class at the marshall Junior High School and was a student of the University of Southern California for three years. Prior to her enlistment, she was employed in the Los Angeles Post Office. [African-American woman.]
